We collaborate with many Maui agencies to bring services to Hāna.
Raising a family is a wonderful and rewarding experience. Since 1999, our Keiki Makamae Program has been assisting pregnant women as well as mothers with children three years and younger in East Maui. Our goal is to teach skills that foster love, respect and open communication and to provide services that keep mothers and babies healthy.
On Thursdays, from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM we offer Keiki Makamae class for mothers who are pregnant or with children under the age of three. During class, we provide a safe aloha environment where moms can gather, relax, talk story, laugh, participate in activities and group discussions, and hear speakers on topics providing education on: parenting skills, infant health practices, women’s empowerment, job skills, substance abuse, and domestic violence. These weekly meetings also provide mothers with emotional support and a sense of community with their peers. A healthy meal is a part of each class that ends with a food box to help stretch the budget of each family.
Our Keiki Makamae Manager can also assist families to obtain essential social services. Domestic violence issues, substance abuse, and mental health issues are addressed by referral within our agency or to appropriate outside agencies. Confidentiality of our services is key in fostering trust within the community and the families we serve.
‘Ohana Makamae is a resource center for the community. We provide referrals for other social service needs.
